David’s Prayer

“Then King David went in and SAT before the LORD, and he said: ‘who am I, O Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And as if this were not enough in your sight, O Sovereign LORD, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant. Is this your usual way of dealing with man, O Sovereign LORD? What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Sovereign LORD. For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant.'”

He SAT.

“How great you are, O Sovereign LORD! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. And who is like your people Israel–the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? You have established your people Israel as your very own forever, and you, O LORD, have become their God.”

He SAT.

“And now, LORD God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised so that your name will be great forever. Then men will say, ‘The LORD Almighty is God over Israel!’ And the house of your servant David will be established before you.”

He SAT.

“O LORD Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, ‘I will build a house for you.’ So your servant has found courage to offer you this prayer. O Sovereign LORD, you are God! Your words are trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant. Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, O Sovereign LORD, have spoken, and with your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever.” – 2 Samuel 7:18-29

“David sat. And he sat before God. By sitting down, David renounced royal initiative, abdicated kingly authority, got himself out of the driver’s seat, and deliberately and reverently placed himself before God his King.” – Eugene Peterson – ‘Leap Over a Wall’

How often do we just SIT?  Whether we are struggling or joyous in our lives and ministry, it’s important to just SIT. David desired to do everything for the Lord, but God wanted him just to SIT and listen. While he SAT he gave his gratitude to the Lord and praised Him for all he had been blessed with.

In the routine and busyness of life we are all caught up in OUR world. We think we are in control and know what’s best for our lives. Our sinful nature gets the best of us and we often forget that we aren’t in control…God IS.

God in His infinite LOVE and mercy sent His son Jesus Christ to the cross for all of our sins. He suffered and died, but then he rose again in victory over sin, death and the devil, and gave each of us hope for eternal life!

Yes, we are commanded to go and make disciples, go and preach the Gospel and serve His kingdom. But sometimes, we need to SIT and LISTEN to what God has to say to us, what He desires for us, that He cares for us and LOVES us through His Son, Jesus Christ.

So, if you find yourself running around like a chicken with their head cut off (which is how I feel most of the time) SIT DOWN and pray, or read the Bible or just reflect on everything that the Lord has blessed you with and  pray for the opportunities He gives you in this life!

Prayer

Dear God, thank you for giving us the opportunity to SIT and listen to you in our lives. Remind us the importance of listening to your voice and knowing that you are in control and know whats best for our lives and our future. Guide us in our lives and help us to pray for new opportunities to serve you!
